Upanayanam is a Hindu rite of passage that marks a student's acceptance by a guru and their initiation into a school. It is also known as the sacred thread ceremony. The Sanskrit word "Upanayanam" is made up of "Upa" and "Nayanam", which mean "close" and "to bring". The ceremony is performed when a Hindu boy is growing up. During the ceremony, the boy is invested with the sacred thread and initiated into the Gayathri mantra. The Gayathri mantra is the holiest of all mantras in the legacy of the Rishis.
